Hi lovelies!
This post will be in English only, because it'll be probably sooo long... I have a huge favour to ask you, but please, don't read this post, if you have a bad stomach!
This post will be in English only, because it'll be probably sooo long... I have a huge favour to ask you, but please, don't read this post, if you have a bad stomach!
WARNING, HORRIBLE PHOTOS ARE AHEAD, PLEASE, DON'T GO AND READ FURTHER IF YOU DON'T STAND INJURIES AND HAVE BAD STOMACH!!!
Let me explain what happened first...
I injured my left thumb nail three weeks ago. I got a small cut at the root of the nail and it didn't hurt at all. It still doesn't, so at least that's good. Well, I did this with sharp nail clippers when I was removing my always so stubborn cuticles. I cut myself and a bit of my nail broke and fell of, but it was so tiny and I didn't even worry. Just out of a precaution I did not polish this nail until now, but there was no wound actually, because the cut was not deep enough to hurt me. There was no blood at all, so I actully don't even know if I got to the skin. The bottom layers of the nail might even be still on, I really don't know.
I wasn't paying much attention to it, I was just sad because I didn't want to polish this nail until it grows out totally. But a strange thing happened - my nail didn't grow out as it should. Don't worry, there is no infection going on and nothing hurts me, not even a little bit. But my nail started to grow UP. Yes, you read this right, it grows at a 90 Degrees angle from as it shoud grow. It separated from my nail bed completely and it grows in upper direction. I really can't describe this well, so if you wonder how this looks, you might want to check photos bellow. I said MIGHT, because it doesn't look pretty...
So I went over to my doctor today to show her what's going on. The funny thing is that she saw me almost right after my injury, because I was there because of cold almost three weeks ago. She said that there's nothing to worry about the nail and that I don't need to come back, unless it got infected. It didn't, but I still went and showed her what's going on. And today she totally shocked me!
She said that this is very abnormal and that my nail would never grow back as it should. So that means that my nail will split up into two pieces after it "grows out" with 3 mm of space in between. She said that nothing could be done, but we can try one more thing. OK, if you have weak stomach like me, please just stop reading right now.
Well, the only possible solution might be that a surgeon pulls my entire nail off. Yes, entire nail. And yes, pulls off!!! =(( =(( =((
And even that is not 100 % sure. The worst thing there is is that I know how much this hurts. I had and accident almost 5 years ago and I pulled the entire nail on my right index finger off. It was done in an instant and I was in shock after I found out what happened to me. But this thing started to hurt, and how much! My finger was in pain for more than two months, but I was lucky and my nail grew back totally the same it was before. My passion for nail polish grew up after that because I was so lucky I had all 10 nails agan. But the pain... I don't wish this for anyone, that's for sure. It makes me sick of thinking about it and I can't even imagine that I might go through all that again. I just can't. I CAN'T.
And what I worry now is that my nail will be split for the rest of my life. It's not just aesthetical problem. You all know how much I love nail polishes and how much I would hate to see my nail like that. But the much bigger problem is that I'd had 3 mm of bare skin in between my nail and that's not good at all. The nail is there for a reason and not just that I can paint it in pretty colors. I might have huge problems in the future if I hit something with my hand. And given how clumsy I am that would happen often...
I know what I did was wrong and that I should never clip my cuticles. But what's done is done and I would like to ask for your help, my dear friends. Did you have similar experience yourself or someone you know? Well, I kinda hope not. But I still hope that at least one of you would know what to do to avoid the pulling... =((
Please please please help me with your advices!
I even asked my doctor if I can press the nail down (and I can because it is flexible enough) and then put some gel over it. I thought that it might force the growing nail to start to grow normal from then on and that the nail would attach to the nail bed after. She said that I can try that, because nothing is infected yet. And if it gets infected after this try, she said that they can pull everything off all together. Ugh, it makes me sick to even think that! =((
So please please please help me if you have any idea... I really don't know what else to do... =((
And here are the photos now, if you came all the way to here, you are probably wondering how the **** does this nail look like?
Here it is just one day after I cut myself, the cut was so tiny and "nothing to worry about":
And here it is how it looks now. The new nail grows up, that's just it. And now the sides of the nail started to lift up as well. And it still doesn't hurt, not even a little bit... Irony, perhaps?
Thank you for your every comment, I'd appreciate it even if you don't know what to do as well...

IzbrišiI would get another opinion. I actually lost my nail on my left pinky when the top of it was slammed in a door, but it grew back. It grew weird, but it did come back. Just make sure to keep it clean.
OdgovoriIzbrišiOuch, this sounds very painful! =(( I'm glad your nail grew back and I hope mine would too. And I tried to get a different oppinion and it was the same... =( But I will still wait a bit and give the nail some time to repair. And for sure I'll be very careful it's very clean! Thank you very much!
IzbrišiOjoj Kvacka! :( Res upam, da boš uspela najt rešitev, jst res nimam nobenega koristnega nasveta. :( Držim pesti, da najdež čim manj bolečo in učinkovito rešitev! :*
IzbrišiI think I'd ask another doctor. I don't know how the doctors are where you live, but my experiences here are that if you consult them with something they don't know what is, then they guess.
OdgovoriIzbrišiAnd if the second doctor says the same, then I'd definitely try the solution with gel as you described. Pulling the nail off (yikes!) would be the last thing I'd consider.
I'm so sorry that this happened to you, and I so hope that doc number two comes up with a solution for you! ♥
Yes, I agree and I got another oppinion, it was not from doctor but from pharmaceut and he said that this is standard procedure and that they always do that... Or if I want to wait and see, that this is my call really. So I'm going to do a tiniest bandage and then I'll put some clear nail polish over it and see what happens if the nail is pressed down. If it'll sting, I can still remove the polish fast and with gel I can't do that. I hope it would start to grow normaly if it's pressed down, I don't know. Thank you for your kind words, Marianne! *hugs*
IzbrišiKeep it clean and moisturize it, the nail should grow without this damaged area.
OdgovoriIzbrišiI'm already moisturizing it a lot and trying to keep it clean. I'll try to press the growing nail down and hopefully it would work... Thank you so much and please, keep your fingers crossed. ;)
IzbrišiPoor you - but I agree with Rainbowify Me, I think maybe a dermatologist might be the best choice.
OdgovoriIzbrišiAlso I would get some "Healthy Hoof" ASAP, use it liberately on the entire cuticle and nail area several times a day and during the night I would wear a thin cotton glove and add even more.
It really is a wonder drug, originally meant for horses hoof's, there are a lot of brands trying to imitate it, but go for this original. I usually buy on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/300674963222?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Oh, thank you so much, Marias!!! I'll definitely try this Healty Hoof cream now, it's on my WL from when I saw it on your blog, but I still didn't buy it. It would be a first thing now!!! Thank you for the link!
IzbrišiAnd for dermatologist I need to go back to my doctor to get a referral from her and she probably won't give it to me, because she already gave me one for surgery... I'll wait now and try to press the growing nail down as she said I can try, but with smallest bandage and nail polish, not gel. If it doesn't get better, I'll definitely go back and ask for the referral! Thank you so much, dear, it means a lot to me! *hugs*
auch poor you :(
OdgovoriIzbrišiMy first tought was to let it grow and see how it develops if it does not hurt. But maybe you should see a good manicurist, if possible someone who trains other ones. I will ask a friend if she can tell you what to do.
Make sure to keep the area soft with a cuticle oil.
I agree so much with you, Crystal! I'd be glad if your friend would have an advice too, please comment again if she does! Thank you a lot!!!
Izbriši:( I totally understand your worries. Here are the good news: It doesn't look that bad. I've seen worse damages. There should be a way to fix it.
OdgovoriIzbrišiGo to the dermatologist and listen what he/she has to say. Depending oh the answer, see a PROFESSIONAL nail designer! The "wound" is dry and not infected, isn't it? Then it shouldn't be a problem to refill your nail with UV gel. Keep it desinfected until you find a solution.
Thank you, Maki! =) The wound is dry and not infected, yes, but I'll wait a bit before I put some gel over... I have asked a professional nail designer what to do with it and she said she wouldn't do it to me so the wound doesn't get infected. Gel is hard to remove and if it doesn't work, the wound wouldn't breathe... So I'll try with a bandage and clear nail polish over it, so I can remove it right away if it starts to hurt. I don't know, I hope it'll work if the new nail is pressed down...
IzbrišiI think it will eventually grow out :)
OdgovoriIzbrišiI hope you're right SOOO MUCH!!! Thank you! =))
IzbrišiHold on! I don't know how to help you, but I really hope that you'll find an easy solution soon! And I agree with Rainbowify Me, maybe you should go to a few other doctors.
OdgovoriIzbrišiThank you, hun! If it doesn't get better I will for sure, but at this moment they would probably all say the same, as the pharmaceut told me... So I'll wait and hopefully see if it'll start to grow ok if I press the growing nail down for help. ;)
IzbrišiPoor you! I know this is very little help but here goes a kiss :-*
OdgovoriIzbrišiDo ask for second (third, fourth) advice. I'll keep ny finbgers crossed!
Oh my gosh, that looks scary! I'm glad you're not in any pain at least. I have no idea and cannot advise you, but I agree with everyone that has suggested you see some other doctors. I cannot believe that the only solution is to pull your entire nail out. Good luck, sweetie! Hope this get better soon! *hugs* <3
OdgovoriIzbriši~ Yun
Thank you, Yun, you're so sweet! =) I'm going to wait and see what happens with the nail, I think that pulling the nail out is too extreme for now and that it just might grow ok by itself. At least I hope that. :) Thank you again!
IzbrišiOuch!! I'm so sorry for your nail Kvacka!! I agree with the other girls: before pulling out your nail I'd try letting it grow (the idea of sealing the gap with gel is good, if it doesn't hurt) and see what happens, perhaps the nail root will heal and "glue" naturally. Keep your cuticles moisturized and disinfected in the meantime (and if you can see some other doctors).
OdgovoriIzbrišiThank you for your comment, Aly! I went to a salon and I got a gel over my whole nail. It didn't hurt a bit and I'm happy of how it looks now and that I can wear polishes over it. And I hope the nail will grow ok from now on. =)
IzbrišiI'm so happy about that (also reading the comment from abolutv, that had the same issue)!! Fingers crossed for your nail, I hope it heals soon!!
IzbrišiThank you, you're sooo sweet! *HUGS* =))
Izbrišihi, the same thing happened to me. you have to file it (gently), until the surface of your nail will be straight. then just use nail polish as usual, and it takes several months to disappear completely, it took 5 months in my case I think. good luck, Vejs :)
OdgovoriIzbrišiOh, I'm so glad that everything turned out ok for you!!! =)) The problem is that my cut was probably deeper and I can't file my nail so much, because it would be too thin then. I have put a layer of gel over it instead and now I can wait for 5 months, no problem. Everything except pulling it out. ;)
IzbrišiMy nail was really thin, but I was scared of putting gel over it. And I agree, pulling it out is the last solution.
IzbrišiHope everything will be OK! Have a nice day
Thank you so much for your care! =) Luckily gel wasn't a problem and it didn't hurt, so I'm glad it looks much better now. I hope it grows that way too. :) Otherwise I will file it down just like you did, it's much better solution than pulling it out. ;) Thank you again! =))
Izbrišioh no im so sorry to hear what happened. thats so weird!!! anyway. i have not heard of anything like that before but i know someone who lost her entire nail and it gre back normally SO if its really the only option, think about it as if you're just going to be uhm nail less on your thumb for a month? and then things would go back to normal...
OdgovoriIzbrišiOh, I lost my nail once too and it really did grow back, but it hurted like h***... And not for a month, but for more than two months and it took four months to grow out. =( So I want to avoid that and I think I hopefully did. :) Thank you! =)
IzbrišiNovosti sa noktom? Neka nova slicica trenutnog stanja?
IzbrišiI think its a really good idea with the waiting and seeing, I definitely agree. take care of it and hopefully it will do you a favor and grow correctly haha :) GOOD LUCK
OdgovoriIzbrišiYes, you are right, it's been almost 3 weeks since I made this post and my nail did start to grow normaly!! =)) So it did do me a favor and next time I'll take more care of it. ;) Thank you!! =))
Izbriši
